    In a December 2019 report, the Maryland Office of Legislative Audits (OLA) recommended the board overseeing Maryland 529 order a forensic audit after finding that the state agency suffered from weak oversight, poor record-keeping practices and high staff turnover...OLA also found the fund was too liberal with how it calculated interest rate payments…. The Maryland 529 agency froze interest payments in April 2022. Source: Baltimore Sun

    The complaint, filed Tuesday in Los Angeles County Court, accuses the prestigious private university of promoting its online education programs, run by 2U, with rankings data that applied only to its in-person courses… A USC spokesperson said the university was still reviewing the lawsuit. On Wednesday, a spokesperson for Maryland-based 2U said the company “categorically denies the baseless and frivolous allegations” and will defend itself against these "unfounded claims.” Source: Washington Post and msn.com

    A District of Columbia Department of Corrections Officer was arrested today after being charged in federal court with embezzling tens of thousands of dollars from a D.C. Department of Corrections Labor Union. The man of Capitol Heights, Maryland, is charged with wire fraud in a criminal complaint filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.

    At a legislative hearing on Tuesday, Labor Secretary Tiffany Robinson offered a robust defense of her agency and its contractors….Also, the head of the Office of Legislative Audits told the panel Tuesday that its review of some of the Labor Department’s handling of unemployment insurance claims generated an “unsatisfactory” rating, triggering expedited follow-on audits in the months to come.     “Google misled Marylanders about its location tracking practices. It built detailed profiles of users but failed to alert them to the extent of the sensitive, personal location information it collected,” said Attorney General Frosh. “Even a limited amount of location data can expose a person’s identity and routines and can be used to infer personal details. As detailed in the settlement, (several states') attorneys general found that Google violated state consumer protection laws. Source: Maryland Attorney General
